In Venezuela they had few job options, but the situation became more complicated, and it was increasingly difficult to have economic stability and access to health services. So, they decided to leave by bus to Cúcuta, the border with Colombia, and the rest of the way they walked to the city of Bucaramanga. Emotionally it was a difficult time because they left their children in Venezuela; they knew it was a complicated journey, and they did not want to expose them without being sure that they would do well. In addition to this, Cheyla had a complex health situation in her spine because she had undergone surgery and did not have the necessary medications for her recovery. This brought him some restrictions since he cannot exert himself because he has a lot of muscular pain in his extremities.

With much effort she managed to return to Venezuela to bring her children with her to Bucaramanga; she returned to feel that her life was complete and with more desire to continue fighting to get ahead. Currently she cannot work and the only support for the household is provided by her partner working informally; this way they manage to get the basics to survive, hoping that someday things will improve and maybe they can return to their country and recover what they have lost for a long time.

Thanks to the health care provided by ADRA through the GIA (Global Initiative for the Americas) migrant response project, with the support of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Cheyla and her family have been able to receive medical care and follow-up and improve their quality of life.

“I am very grateful to ADRA because not even in my own country would I be able to get medical appointments, medicines and many less laboratories; it is very complicated to get them because of the high costs. We have obtained treatment for the illnesses, because currently we do not have a legal document that allows us to have affiliation to health services in Colombia”. For Cheyla and her family, ADRA and this project is a helping hand.

After the loss of her parents, she found in her sister, nephew and children a loving home that sustains her in her daily struggle. For her, this place not only represents her story, but also her refuge and protection. Although at some point, she considered moving elsewhere, she decided to stay because she feels safe and supported by her family.

Currently, in addition to being a housewife, Johanna tells us that she is studying at the National Learning Service (SENA) , in the hope of providing a better future for her family.
Her son, who suffers from dust allergy, requires inhalers constantly, but it has been a constant struggle to get them through the public health system. The long waits at the Hospital del Norte in Bucaramanga, which is far from the village where they live, the lack of availability of medicines and the barriers due to the paperwork, have made this a long and exhausting process. She also mentions that “…when I was able to receive medical attention and was prescribed the medicines, I had to go to Bucaramanga to claim them, which meant time, money and, on many occasions, returning empty-handed because they were not available…”.

It was thanks to the president of the Bocas Community Action Board that Johanna learned about the SSIASUD health project that ADRA Colombia implements with the support of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. From the first time she heard about the project, she knew it was an invaluable opportunity for her family. “They told us there were no barriers to approach and ask, so from that moment on I saw that my son could get the care he so desperately needed”, she recalls with relief. Since being part of SSIASUD, Johanna has received medical consultations for herself and her children, access to medications and the ability to have lab tests when they needed it most. “The benefit of receiving the medications has been huge, because we can recover very quickly. Everything has been excellent”, she says gratefully.

Today, her quality of life and that of her children has improved significantly. Johanna knows she is not alone in her fight for her family’s health and sends a sincere message to those who make this project possible: “It is of great benefit, for the opportunity they are giving us. It is a blessing to have medicines available… We thank ADRA for this opportunity they are giving us, the people here, we are truly very grateful.”

________________________
SENA is a public educational institution in Colombia that offers free training in technical, technological and complementary programs.

David lived with his wife and young son in Venezuela; given the situation in their country, they began to plan their migration to Colombia. He says that the main basic services for a dignified life were increasingly precarious and deficient; in addition, the income they earned from their work was not enough to pay for food, much less for medical care. The time came when they were left without sufficient resources.

They decided to sell what they still had and raise money for their trip and to cover their basic needs for the first few days. They left for Medellín, where David’s sister was already living and could provide support. They traveled 28 hours and faced various situations at the border and on their journey; leaving Venezuela was not easy.

After a few months they managed to find a place to live and little by little they have begun to rebuild their lives and try to obtain what they need; however, since they were in Venezuela one of their biggest concerns was the health of their son, who has suffered from asthma, and there he could not access a complete treatment. This situation has worsened due to temperature changes and because David and his wife, as irregular migrants, do not have access to the Colombian health system or to a formal job to generate sufficient resources to pay for private medical consultations. They have sought timely medical attention at health centers but have been denied service or treatment.

The neighbor who rented where they live today told them about ADRA and the assistance it provides to the migrant population. This is how David got in touch with the ADRA team; together with his family, they were registered in a timely manner in the migrant response project (Global Initiative for the Americas), which ADRA implements with the support of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and received care at the associated clinic Adventist University IPS. David’s son had his first medical consultation, received medication and laboratory tests to start the respective treatment and has continued to attend medical consultations for control and follow-up; his entire family has also attended the doctor, and all received the project’s identification card, which allows them to receive care during the life of the project.

David shares with us that: “…we came here, and they treated us wonderfully”.
“I was one of those who could never go to the doctor, I didn’t know how I was and here they have taken care of me, they have given me these check-ups; I didn’t even know I was suffering from high blood pressure and that was hurting me and here I am taking care of it, regulating it… Here at ADRA the doctor sees the child, sends him for the test, sees what damage he has, this has been a blessing for us”.

“…. We were told that here in Medellin there were organizations that were helping Venezuelans, but we did not know the level…. I am amazed, we thank God every day for this help, we really do, may God bless them, and may he continue to multiply them, and may they also reach other people who do not have this help.”

The ADRA team contacted Nor Jean and in a timely manner the first medical consultation was scheduled at the Adventist University IPS clinic, where she received the care that she needed; she also received medication and laboratory tests. She has been able to continue attending follow-up medical appointments for her health and diabetes.
ADRA’s social work team has also provided with information and guidance for her and her family regarding other institutions that can provide care for complementary services and other basic needs.

“I am very happy with the care received at ADRA, from the way they receive you, the way they treat you, the way the doctor treated me. It is incredible that they offer us medications; I feel that they do not provide care only for the physical part, but from the treatment I feel that they contribute to the mental part, because it is a space where I can talk without being singled out, without being persecuted. So, I feel very good with ADRA.”
“My life has changed significantly, because I felt bad, I didn’t know what I had, I couldn’t get care because the tests are very expensive, and I didn’t have insurance to cover them. I come here, they attend me, and I realize that I am diabetic, and they give me the treatment; besides that, the human warmth they have, because after the diagnosis I was pensive and all the people who made this process possible gave me “drops” of hope, without even knowing me, but from that human warmth.”

Jair Flórez Guzmán, the director of ADRA, emphasized the role of NGOs in the fight against climate change: “Along with ADRA directors and leaders worldwide, we have been working on the issue of climate change and the green economy. This was a topic addressed during our visit to Turkey in March, where the need for the Adventist NGO to contribute to climate change and the environment through its actions was highlighted.”

Flórez underscored the role of NGOs in raising awareness among society about the environment and climate change through training, education, and formation activities.

In late 2020, due to the COVID crisis, Francis and her family migrated to the southern part of the continent. They traveled on foot, asking for help from passing vehicles. She describes crossing borders through trochas, crossing rivers, and walking hundreds of kilometers. She made this journey while pregnant and with her young daughter, but they finally arrived in Lima, Peru, where her twins were born.

Motivated by the “American dream,” in 2022, they decided to migrate to the United States in search of a better future. However, Francis was unable to undertake the journey through the Darien jungle, and she remained alone in Medellin, taking care of her children.

The economic situation has been difficult; her main source of income is street vending, and due to her irregular migration status, they have not been able to achieve socioeconomic integration. Francis shares that her greatest need has been the health of her children, especially the twins, who have been experiencing health difficulties since last year and had not received medical attention because they are not affiliated with a health insurance provider (EPS). This is because they have Peruvian nationality and cannot qualify for the Temporary Protection Status (ETPV) program.

Francis lives in a boarding house where she pays for accommodation on a daily basis. While discussing her situation with a neighbor, the neighbor mentioned that her daughter was a beneficiary of ADRA in the health project implemented with the support of ADRA International. Francis was fearful that her Peruvian children would not be able to receive assistance, as she had experienced situations where “only Venezuelans receive free care.” However, she went to the IPS Universitaria Adventista, and the ADRA team registered her family. Since November 2022, they have been receiving medical care and basic medications. The twins were also able to undergo the laboratory tests they had needed for some time but couldn’t afford. Francis says, “I found a light at the end of the tunnel for my children. Thank you very much for giving me hope.”

In response to the social emergency resulting from recent road blockades in Bajo Cauca, Antioquia, in northern Colombia, the Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) in Colombia, in partnership with the Central Western Association, distributed food to assist the affected high-risk populations.

“Both organizations, ADRA Colombia and its regional headquarters, were in charge of food distribution,” said Jair Flórez Guzmán, director of ADRA Colombia. “We thanked God for the communities that collaborated to collect the food distributed in this difficult time.”

ADRA has helped around three hundred families with essential food items such as rice, beans, and oil in the northern municipal towns of Zaragoza, Caucasia, El Bagre, and Segovia, said the leaders. The distribution was very challenging due to security challenges in the area. Miners had been protesting for improvements in working conditions, resulting in road blockades that affected thousands of people in two provinces, preventing them from accessing food, medicine, and fuel, as reported by the media.

Nevertheless, ADRA managed to overcome the difficulties and reach hundreds of beneficiaries. “When the roads were closed, we sent money and food with a driver escorted by the police and the army,” said Roger González, coordinator of ADRA in the Central Western Association. “We conducted a population survey to identify families experiencing food shortages, and then we selected the most affected ones,” he explained.

At the same time, González highlighted the support of the Adventist community in Medellín, who mobilized to help the population in Bajo Cauca. “We informed the church members in Medellín about the situation of our brothers and sisters,” González said, “and they provided us with money and food. It was such a great blessing that everyone came to help,” he said.

Recognizing the importance of being prepared for emergencies, ADRA has started working on a project called Plan José, which aims to have food reserves in each church, following the guidelines of emergency agencies. The idea is that when difficulties arise, the congregations themselves can contribute to support relief efforts, the leaders said.

The assisted families expressed gratitude for the support received, explained Guzmán. “The food distribution initiative was a blessing for them and allowed them to have some relief in the midst of the difficult situation they are going through.”
